Series background & context

The Miranda's Rights Mystery series introduces Miranda Steele, a tough, smart-talking woman with a painful past and one overwhelming goal: find the daughter she lost years earlier. The five novels blend murder investigations with Miranda's search for answers about the child her abusive former husband gave up for adoption.

The series starts with Someone Else's Daughter. Miranda comes to Atlanta after finding a letter written by a girl who says she was adopted. She wonders whether the girl could be her daughter. At the same time, she takes work with private investigator Wade Parker, whose agency is looking into the disappearance and death of another young girl. Miranda's instincts are strong, but her anger, distrust, and refusal to follow rules make the work difficult.

Wade Parker becomes the other key figure in the series. He is experienced, wealthy, and used to being in control, while Miranda has survived by depending on herself. Their attraction is immediate, but the books do not treat love as a quick fix for Miranda's history. She has to learn whether she can trust Parker, and he has to accept that protecting her does not mean making choices for her.

The mysteries stay central. Delicious Torment sends Miranda into a murder case involving high society. Forever Mine brings her back to Chicago, where her past and a killer both wait. Fire Dancer takes a honeymoon in Maui in a dangerous direction. In Thin Ice, the long search for Miranda's daughter moves toward a turning point while a violent threat closes in.

The heart of the series is personal.

Atlanta is the main base, but the books travel when the investigation or Miranda's history demands it. Lanier gives Miranda practical skills, a sharp temper, and a strong instinct to defend people who cannot defend themselves. Those traits help make her a detective, even when they also get her into trouble.

Read the five novels in order. Miranda's personal history and her relationship with Parker develop across every book, and the final volume leads directly into the Miranda and Parker Mystery series. Start with Someone Else's Daughter for the fullest introduction to her voice, her loss, and the case that changes the direction of her life.
