Clever Detective Books in Order

The Clever Detective series takes private investigator Stacey Alexander somewhere she never expected to go: through a hollow tree and into a fairy-tale world. Stacey has spent years doing regular detective work, but the rules change when an odd old man with a crown asks her to find his missing son.

That son is Prince Chad. He is also the reason Stacey decides not to climb straight back out of the tree.

The first story, The Clever Detective, sets the playful premise. Stacey is a modern PI with a practical mind, a sharp tongue, and no obvious reason to believe in fairy kings. Yet she is soon taking a case in a kingdom whose customs, dangers, and royal problems are far outside her usual experience. The setup gives the series a fish-out-of-water energy, with mystery, romance, and humor working together.

The books continue Stacey and Chad's story as she returns to his world and faces new problems there. Clever is as Clever Does follows the first adventure, while Cleverest of Them All expands the story into a longer novella. Clever and Courageous and A Clever Season bring Stacey back to Prince Chad's world for more fantasy complications and romantic trouble.

These are lighter reads than Lanier's crime thrillers. The danger is real enough to keep a case moving, but the mood is more whimsical than grim. The stories enjoy fairy-tale setups, culture clashes, and the idea that a capable private investigator can use her real-world skills in a place with royalty, unusual rules, and impossible expectations.

Stacey does not become less practical just because the setting gets magical.

The romance grows alongside the mysteries. Chad is a prince, but the series is less interested in a perfect storybook courtship than in how two people from very different worlds can make a connection work. Stacey's investigative instincts keep getting useful, and her willingness to question authority is not always what the fairy kingdom expects.
