The Miranda Jack books follow Miranda "Jax" Jack, a journalist and mother trying to make sense of loss while events keep pulling her toward danger. Jax is used to asking questions for a living, and that habit becomes both her strength and her problem. When something doesn't add up, she cannot easily walk away.

The story begins chronologically with the novella Already Gone. Two months after Jax's husband, Nick, is killed in a hit-and-run, she is still searching for an explanation. The police have stopped taking her calls, so she goes back to the street where he died. There she meets Irene Newton, an older woman whose own family tragedy has left unanswered questions for decades.

Jax sees too much of herself in Irene's long wait for the truth. What starts as a search for answers about Nick becomes tangled with an older mystery, and the novella shows the grief and stubbornness that shape Jax before the main novel begins.

In Already Dead, Jax is attempting a practical fresh start. Still grieving Nick and carrying the responsibility of her young daughter, Zoe, she packs up her Sydney life and plans to move north to Newcastle. At a traffic light, an armed stranger gets into her car and orders her onto the motorway. The immediate problem is survival, but the ordeal leaves Jax with a trail of questions she cannot ignore.

This is close, personal suspense rather than a traditional police procedural. The danger comes from confined spaces, unreliable information, and the awful feeling that a stranger's crisis has suddenly become Jax's own. Her journalism experience matters because she notices details, listens closely, and keeps pressing when others would rather let things go.

The books are connected by Jax's ongoing grief, her determination to protect Zoe, and the mysteries that grow out of Nick's death. Read Already Gone first for the earliest part of her story, then move to Already Dead for the full-length, high-pressure thriller. Readers can also begin with Already Dead, but the novella adds useful emotional background to Jax's search for the truth.
