Cold Winter Sun opens the map right up, taking Mike and Terry to California and then New Mexico for a missing-person hunt that becomes much stranger and more dangerous than expected. The travel gives the second book a wider, almost road-movie feel, but the suspense stays personal.

What links the books is not a formal detective job or an official badge. It is Mike's habit of getting dragged into trouble because he cannot ignore what is happening in front of him. The stakes are usually immediate, keep moving, work out who can be trusted, protect the vulnerable, stay alive. Forder also keeps Mike grounded with threads from his personal life, especially his links to his ex-wife and daughter, which stop him from feeling like an action machine.

So if you want Tony J Forder at his most punchy, this is probably the place to look. Expect chases, sudden violence, shifting loyalties, and a lead who has to think on his feet. Beneath all that noise, though, the Mike Lynch books are really about loyalty, decency, and the trouble that starts when a basically decent man says he is not leaving anyone behind.
