Series background & context

The DI Bliss books are police procedurals set mainly in Peterborough, and they lean hard into the daily grind of investigation rather than superhuman detective tricks. At the center is Jimmy Bliss, a stubborn, sharp, often short-tempered detective with a painful past and a strong sense of justice. He is the sort of officer who would rather upset a superior than let a bad answer stand.

He does not work alone for long. Penny Chandler becomes the series' other vital half, first as his junior partner and later as a detective who can match him in grit, instinct, and sheer refusal to let go of a case. Their partnership is one of the big reasons the books work. They argue, tease, cover each other, and keep moving.

Peterborough matters here. The city is not just a backdrop for murders, missing people, trafficking cases, gang violence, and old secrets, it shapes the feel of the series. Forder writes it as a lived-in place of roads, estates, offices, woods, pubs, pressure, and memory. When the story widens to London, California, or beyond, the emotional base still feels rooted in Bliss's patch and the team around him.

The cases are dark. A dug-up skeleton in Bad to the Bone. A serial investigation with links far outside the city in The Scent of Guilt. A young woman carrying one of Bliss's cards in The Autumn Tree. Later books keep expanding the scale, but the throughline stays the same, Bliss and his colleagues are always up against people who think power, money, or fear will keep them safe.

That also means the series is not just about solving a mystery of the week. Bliss has health problems, a history that never quite stops tugging at him, and a habit of pushing himself too far. Chandler carries wounds of her own. Careers shift, loyalties are tested, and the unit changes over time. The prequel novella Bliss Uncovered goes back to Jimmy's younger days, while the later novels follow him into retirement and then into a different kind of investigative role.

Expect plenty of police procedure, but also plenty of personality. These books have anger, grief, institutional resistance, and some nasty criminals, yet they also make room for dry humor and real affection between colleagues. If you like crime series where the team dynamics matter as much as the plot, DI Bliss is very easy to settle into.

And once you are in, the long arc is the real draw.
