He is trying to rebuild a life while taking cases that pull him into danger, and his past keeps affecting the people closest to him. That gives the mysteries a personal stake beyond simply identifying a killer.

The setting matters just as much. The series moves through Mobile and nearby Gulf Coast communities, including Fairhope, Bayou La Batre, and Dauphin Island. Courthouses, marinas, old houses, waterfront businesses, back roads, and storm-battered islands create a lived-in Southern backdrop. The heat, rain, water, and relative isolation can make a routine investigation feel more exposed.

Each book gives Mike a new legal problem. In Double Take, he represents a former police detective accused of murder and follows a case tangled with money, secrets, and competing agendas. Electric Beach leads him toward a darker operation hiding behind an ordinary business. In Night Rain, a hurricane and a body found in an evacuated home put him in the difficult position of defending a man who looks very guilty. The Deposition brings consequences from an earlier case back into Mike's circle.

The crimes grow larger, but the stories stay focused on people caught in the middle. Clients may be flawed or desperate. Witnesses have reasons to hold back. Powerful people can use the law as cover, while those without money or influence have few places to turn. Mike has to sort through unreliable stories, follow overlooked facts, and decide how far he is willing to go for a client.

There is also a thread of faith and conscience in the series, especially in Mike's friendship with Father Scott and in Mike's effort to become a better man. It is part of the character work, not a substitute for the investigation. The books remain grounded in legal strategy, local politics, criminal schemes, and the pressure of getting the truth into court.
