Series background & context
The Midnight in Manhattan books are sapphic city romances with a strong sense of place and a very inviting central myth. At the heart of the series is a signature drink called a Midnight in Manhattan. Rumor has it that if you drink one at midnight, you will fall in love before the end of the year. That rumor gives the series its name, but it is the women around it, smart, accomplished, bruised, funny, and often a little guarded, who make the books stick.
The first novel, Don't Cry for Me, starts at Josie's bar and gives the series its emotional blueprint. Eve Marlow is a television host desperate to save her business makeover show. Josie Swanson is trying to keep her late father's bar from going under. Add rescue kittens, career pressure, and a very slow-burn attraction, and you get a story that feels polished on the outside and tender underneath. That mix carries through the rest of the series.
Then It's in Her Kiss shifts the focus to Broadway. Sophie and Jules are actresses chasing the same breakout role in a new queer musical, and their rivalry gives the book a sharper edge. Come Away with Me moves into a quieter, more intimate register. Piper Sheridan is an actress trying to reclaim her life after a traumatic experience leaves her struggling with panic attacks, and Chloe Carson, a flight attendant just passing through the city, becomes an unexpected lifeline. The series is good at this, letting glamour and vulnerability sit in the same room.
New York sparkles, but the emotional pull is intimate.
By the time She'll Steal Your Heart arrives, the series is comfortable letting a less obvious heroine take center stage. Lauren Booker comes back to New York hoping to make amends for a crime that sent her running, and Mia Solano is a former lawyer trying to build a gentler life with a cat café. Their story brings in friendship, redemption, and the question of whether people can really start over when the past is still close enough to touch.
A big part of the pleasure here is the way the books connect without becoming tangled. Characters recur. Places recur. Swanson's bar keeps serving drinks. Cats and kittens wander in at just the right moments. But each book still has its own emotional shape. One leans more workplace, another more performance-driven, another more about healing and recovery.
If you like romance set in a version of New York that feels busy but still personal, Midnight in Manhattan does that very well. These are not stories about anonymous city life. They are about pockets of belonging inside a huge place: a bar, a theater, a cat café, a small circle of friends. The result is a series that feels both glamorous and cozy, which is not an easy balance to pull off.
