Author bio

Rachel Lacey writes contemporary romance with a big heart, sharp emotional timing, and a clear love of people trying to start over. She describes herself as a semi-reformed travel junkie, and that seems to tell you a lot right away. Before most of her adventures moved onto the page, she was climbed by a monkey on a mountain in Japan, went scuba diving on the Great Barrier Reef, and camped overnight in New York City for a chance to be an extra in a movie.

That mix of curiosity and boldness runs straight through her books.

Lacey published her debut novel, Unleashed, in 2014. From there she built a backlist that moves easily between small-town romance, celebrity stories, fairy-tale riffs, and sapphic contemporary romance. Even when the settings change, her stories tend to care about the same things: connection, second chances, found family, and the relief of being fully seen by someone else.

Her early series helped define the warm, comforting side of her work. Books like Run to You and If the Shoe Fits lean into fake dating, castles, rescue pets, and tight-knit communities. Unwritten showed another side of her range, taking readers into fame, scandal, and the pressure of public life without losing the emotional closeness that makes romance work. Readers who stick with her for a while start to notice how often her characters are in the middle of a life pivot.

Then her New York sapphic books opened up a whole new lane.

With Don't Cry for Me, Read Between the Lines, and No Rings Attached, Lacey settled into stories about ambitious women, chosen family, and the push and pull between work and love. She writes Broadway performers, booksellers, television hosts, lawyers, bar owners, and pop stars, but she keeps the language and the feelings grounded. Even when the setup is glossy, the core question is usually simple: can these two people let themselves be known?

That balance shows up again in Stars Collide, where a pop icon and a rising singer find chemistry under bright lights, and in Cover Story, which pairs a movie star with the bodyguard pretending to be her girlfriend. In Learning Curves, she shifts into academia and age-gap tension. In The View from the Top, she brings the drama back to Vermont, with career ambition on one side and home on the other. The through line is easy to spot. Lacey likes capable people with messy feelings.

She also really likes animals, and readers benefit from that. Rescue dogs, kittens, cat cafés, and other furry scene-stealers show up all over her books, not as decoration, but as part of the worlds her characters live in. Her stories often feel warmer because of it. Love is important, yes, but so are community, caretaking, and the small everyday choices that make a life feel livable.

These days Lacey lives in the mountains of Vermont with her family and a variety of rescue pets. That mountain and small-town energy has become part of her more recent work, but she still moves comfortably between cozy local settings and big, sparkling ones like Manhattan or the music world. If you're new to her, the nice thing is that there isn't just one Rachel Lacey lane. You can start with a bookstore romance, a pop-star slow burn, a fairy-tale castle, or a survival story, and you will still get the same warm, generous view of love.
