Series background & context

The Almost Royal books take a very fun romance setup and give it a grounded, modern spin. Three best friends win the chance to live and work at Rosemont Castle in Virginia, a place that sounds like a fantasy but comes with real jobs, real stress, and real feelings. That castle becomes the center of the whole series, pulling together fairy-tale charm, small-town warmth, and just enough pseudo-royal drama to keep things lively.

The first book, If the Shoe Fits, introduces Elle Davenport, who has spent her working life dressing up as a princess at a theme park. When she lands at Rosemont Castle, it feels like her own story might finally be turning around. The problem is Theo Langdon, the new Earl of Highcastle, who has his own plans for the property. Their clash gives the series its first taste of what Almost Royal does well: fantasy on the surface, practical life questions underneath.

The castle does a lot of the matchmaking.

In Once Upon a Cowboy, the focus shifts to Megan Perl, one of Elle's friends and a key part of the Rosemont world. Megan is still living with the effects of a car accident that left her permanently scarred, and the book takes that seriously without losing its romantic core. Her love story with Jake Reardon, a widower and horse trainer renting the stables on the castle grounds, adds a more bruised, tender note to the series. It is still escapist, but it never forgets that both characters are carrying something heavy.

Then Let Your Hair Down opens the gates and lets the story roam. Ruby Keller, the third friend, has spent much of her life playing it safe after a childhood shaped by illness. Her book sends her out into the wider world, first to London and then into a broader travel adventure, where she meets Flynn Bowen. That gives the series a slightly different feel, less castle-bound, more about learning how to take up space in your own life.

What ties these books together is not a big external plot. It is the shared setting, the friendship between the women, and the sense that Rosemont Castle gives each of them a chance to become more fully themselves. There are rescue animals, gorgeous scenery, a little glamour, and a lot of emotional safety. If you like romance that borrows fairy-tale shapes but keeps the people recognizably human, this is a very easy series to sink into.

There is also a holiday crossover novella, My Gift is You, that connects this world with Haven from Rachel Lacey's Risking It All books. That tells you a lot about the tone of Almost Royal. It is a place readers are meant to want to revisit, especially when they are in the mood for comfort, chemistry, and a setting that feels just a little bit magical.
