Through poems about poverty, motherhood, and the bonds between mothers and daughters, Michelle Porter examines how class shapes ordinary lives. Anger and humor accompany reflections on love, dignity, and the intimate consequences of living with economic insecurity.

Searching for her Métis great-grandfather, fiddler Léon Robert Goulet, Michelle Porter follows family traces through music, photographs, and poetry. Her investigation links personal loss with cultural memory and the renewing possibilities suggested by fire and changing landscapes.

Michelle Porter seeks a safe home for her brother, whose autism and schizophrenia have left him vulnerable to abuse. Family stories and Métis history accompany an exploration of care, belonging, and the difficult work of healing fractured relationships.

Five generations of Métis women tell interwoven stories of family, loss, addiction, and belonging, with ancestors continuing to speak beyond death. Their lives connect through the search for cultural identity and the enduring pull of mothers, daughters, and grandmothers.
