Author bio

Michael McBride was born in Colorado Springs, Colorado, the child of an engineer and a teacher. Science and history were early interests, and both still show up all over his fiction, whether he is writing about a remote research station, a buried ruin, or a threat that has escaped human control.

He studied biology and creative writing at the University of Colorado. That combination gives his books a useful balance. The science is part of the setup, but the stories usually push people into places where knowledge alone will not keep them safe.

Before becoming a full-time author, McBride worked as an X-ray, CT, and MRI technologist and as a clinical instructor. His experience with medical imaging and biology helped shape the practical detail in his horror and thriller novels. Labs, field teams, emergency responses, and impossible specimens tend to feel like they belong in a real world before everything goes wrong.

His early novel Species introduced one of the patterns readers will find throughout his work: a disaster that is both large in scale and intensely personal. In God's End, the apocalypse arrives through prophecy and the Four Horsemen. In Snowblind, a hunting trip in the Colorado mountains turns into a fight to survive a storm and a hidden predator.

McBride likes putting characters at the edge of the map.

Antarctica, the Amazon, the Sonoran Desert, Siberia, Greenland, and deep underground caverns all become pressure cookers in his stories. His protagonists are often scientists, agents, soldiers, rescue workers, or ordinary people who have to make decisions before they have enough information. The danger might be biological, supernatural, ancient, or something that refuses to fit any familiar category.

The Unit 51 novels, beginning with Subhuman, lean into that mix of science fiction and creature horror. The Viral Apocalypse books, starting with Contagion, follow a spreading infection and a scattered group of survivors as the scale of the crisis grows. Standalones such as Burial Ground, Sunblind, Subterrestrial, and Chimera keep returning to McBride's favorite question: what happens when an expedition finds the one thing it was never meant to uncover?

The monsters are rarely the only problem.

McBride's books also make room for grief, divided loyalties, fear, and the bad choices people make when the usual rules fall apart. That is part of why the action has weight. A character may be trying to solve a mystery or contain an outbreak, but they are also dealing with family, guilt, faith, or the cost of leaving someone behind.

He now lives in New Hampshire's Lakes Region with his wife, children, and Labrador Retrievers. He also writes conspiracy thrillers under the name Michael Laurence. Across both names, his work keeps circling the same uneasy territory: hidden history, real-world science, and the moment an ordinary investigation becomes a very bad day.
