Author bio
Michael Chatfield was born in the United Kingdom and later made his life in Canada. Before he became known for long-running fantasy and science fiction series, he served in the Canadian Army as an infanteer. That background shows up all through his fiction, not as decoration, but in the way squads move, how plans get made, and how hard it is to keep people alive once a fight starts.
He writes like somebody who has spent time thinking about consequences.
Chatfield has said he started writing professionally at 21. He was already hooked on science fiction and fantasy, and later found a natural home in LitRPG and progression fantasy. From the start, he aimed at the kind of books he wanted to read himself, fast-moving stories with clear systems, practical characters, and teams that have to earn every bit of progress.
That approach lands a little differently from series to series. The Recruitment leans into military space opera, with conscription, powered armor, and fleet action. The Trapped Mind Project opens the much bigger Emerilia story with crafting, guilds, and the slow realization that the world is stranger than it first appears. The Two Week Curse throws two veterans into a cultivation-heavy fantasy realm and lets them build, fight, and improvise their way upward.
He likes big worlds, but he rarely starts at the top of them.
A lot of Chatfield's books begin with people trying to survive one bad day. Then the scope widens. Skeleton with a Heart turns an undead awakening into a funny, warm fantasy adventure. Connection Unknown starts with a young man chasing a future inside a hypernet game and grows into a larger space conflict. Restarting the Apocalypse takes a grim regressor setup and treats it like a planning problem. If you know the end is coming, what do you build first, and who do you save before the world breaks again?
Across all of those series, the same interests keep coming back. Chatfield likes crews more than lone wolves. He likes systems that make sense, whether that means stats, magic, training, supply lines, dungeons, or ship design. He also likes watching people work. His books spend real time on building, preparing, testing ideas, and making something solid before the next disaster hits.
That practical streak is a big part of the appeal.
Readers who click with his work usually do so for a few simple reasons. The pacing is quick. The stakes climb steadily. The power growth feels earned instead of handed out. Even when the stories get very large, they tend to stay grounded in comradeship, craft, and the small decisions that keep a group together under pressure.
Chatfield writes across LitRPG, fantasy, military science fiction, and post-apocalyptic survival, and his books have reached millions of readers in print, ebook, and audio. He keeps returning to the same core promise, a world with rules, a team worth following, and a lot more story once the first fight is over.
