Metal Books in Order

Metal is the name usually given to Varley's loose trio of later lunar novels, Steel Beach, The Golden Globe, and Irontown Blues. They sit inside the broader Eight Worlds setting, but they have their own mood. These books are less about the first shock of humanity losing Earth and more about what happens after people have had time to build a replacement civilization, and discover that comfort does not solve everything.

Luna is the real lead character.

In Steel Beach, Varley drops you into a Moon society where body changes are easy, lifespans are long, and almost every material need can be met. On the surface it looks like a utopia. Then the cracks show. Reporter Hildy Johnson finds a culture wrestling with depression, suicide, political unease, and a central computer that may have problems of its own. The book is funny in places, but it is also quietly sad and very interested in what people do when life becomes too frictionless.

The Golden Globe uses the same future in a different key. Its lead, Sparky Valentine, is an actor, con man, drifter, and professional self-invention machine. He moves across the outer solar system carrying Shakespeare, grudges, disguises, and a long personal history. The book turns the setting into something theatrical and slippery, where performance is not just art but survival. Identity, already flexible in this world, becomes almost a working profession.

Irontown Blues changes genres again. Christopher Bach, once a policeman during Luna's Big Glitch, now works as a private detective with help from his altered dog, Sherlock. A case involving an engineered disease pulls him into Irontown, one of the rougher corners of lunar life. That gives Varley room to show the setting from below, not just from media studios and polished public spaces, but from a neighborhood where biohacking, class tension, and old damage still shape daily life.

That mix of tones is what makes Metal interesting. One book is social satire with a bruised heart. One is a roaming performance novel. One is noir with biotech teeth. The common thread is Luna, and Varley's ongoing question about what stays solid when bodies, identities, and social rules can all be rewritten. If you like your future cities strange, lived-in, and a little melancholy, this is a very good corner of his work to explore.
