The Talyton St. George books are set in a fictional market town in East Devon, where vets, farmers, shopkeepers, horse people, and young families keep bumping into one another. Animals are everywhere, from pampered pets to rescue dogs to horses and livestock, so the series feels rooted in daily work as much as romance. It is village fiction, but with muddy boots, emergency calls, and people who do not always have their lives sorted out.

The series begins with City Girl, Country Vet, where London vet Maz Harwood arrives to help at her friend Emma's struggling practice and finds herself battling local suspicion, a rival clinic, and fresh feelings for Alex Fox-Gifford. Must Be Love and It's a Vet's Life keep Maz and Alex at the center, following the pressures of partnership, parenthood, and the hard reality of making a country practice work. Those early books set the tone: warm, funny, busy, and grounded in animal care.

After that, the village opens up.

Later books shift the spotlight to different residents while keeping the same shared world. The Sweetest Thing follows Jennie as she rebuilds her life with her children, animals, and a baking business. The Village Vet pairs vet nurse Tessa with animal welfare officer Jack, while Vets in Love moves toward the horsey side of town with doctor and rider Nicci, and Baby on Board revisits Nicci and Matt in shorter form. Then come Country Loving, Follow Me Home, Accidentally in Love, and Springtime at Cherry Tree Cottage, each bringing in a new central couple but letting familiar faces drift back through the story.

That structure is really the charm of the series. Each book can stand on its own, but reading in order lets you watch the town deepen around the edges. A side character in one novel may get center stage later. Someone's wedding, pregnancy, business trouble, or old heartbreak keeps echoing in the background of the next book. Otter House, the village practice, acts like a hub, but the series also makes room for farms, cottages, stables, shops, and rescue work, so the setting feels lived in rather than just pretty.

The town is the real through line.

If you like cozy rural romance with a little more work and worry in it, this is the lane Cathy Woodman writes especially well. The books are gentle without being weightless. People fall in love, of course, but they also deal with sick animals, family strain, money problems, self-doubt, and the question of whether a fresh start can actually hold.
