Author bio

Melissa McShane has joked that when people ask where she grew up, the answer is basically, pick one. Her family moved often, and she has named Oregon, Washington State, Colorado, New York State, Arizona, and Texas among the places she called home. Reading was the constant.

She still remembers places by the books she was reading there.

That early life of moving around shows up in her fiction in a quiet way. Her books are full of people in motion, people crossing borders, people trying to figure out where they belong, and people building loyalty under pressure. Even when she writes palace intrigue, dragons, or game-based fantasy quests, there is usually someone in the middle of it all trying to make a home in uncertain ground.

Before she turned to fiction, she studied young adult literature in college and spent years writing literary essays and reviews. She has also worked as a librarian twice, once as a shelver in a public library and once supervising the collection of a small private school. That mix of reader, critic, and librarian feels important. Her stories often have a strong sense of what makes a book satisfying: a clear emotional line, lively pacing, and characters who have to earn their victories.

The turning point came when she had the idea for Emissary and decided, mostly for fun, to see whether she could turn it into a novel. She has said the process was hard, exciting, and more fun than anyone ought to be allowed to have, which is a pretty good origin story for a fantasy writer. She kept going, and over time built a large body of work that ranges across court fantasy, historical fantasy, urban fantasy, dragon stories, and LitRPG adventure.

A few books give a good sense of her range. Servant of the Crown opens the Tremontane books with court politics, romance, and a heroine who would rather be with books than at court. Burning Bright takes Regency adventure and adds naval warfare, pirates, and a woman who can command fire. The Book of Secrets starts with a strange bookstore and quickly turns into a war for the fate of humanity. Company of Strangers leans into classic quest fantasy, with a scrapper team exploring dangerous ruins. And Dungeon Spiteful shows her playful side, dropping a determined heroine into a world ruled by classes, skills, and dungeons.

Across those series, some patterns keep returning. McShane likes capable women who are underestimated, friendships that have to be built the hard way, and magic that changes not just battles but whole societies. She also seems drawn to settings with rules, whether that means court etiquette, naval hierarchy, religious duty, or literal game systems. Her characters rarely get to stand outside the world. They have to work inside it, bend it, or survive it.

That practical streak is part of the appeal.

In her life away from the page, she has written about spending time with her family, binge-watching anime, playing Arkham Horror, sewing costumes, repairing and making jewelry, and painting fantasy miniatures. She has also said that she lives in Utah, where her children have grown up, and that she shares her home with four very needy cats. That feels exactly right for a writer whose books mix order and chaos so well.
