Author bio
Melissa de la Cruz grew up in Manila and moved with her family to San Francisco when she was young. She has said she was the kind of kid who always had a book in hand, and that early reading life shows up all through her work, from glossy teen drama to fantasy, romance, and middle grade adventure.
One small turning point came early. As a girl, she read an interview with Sweet Valley High creator Francine Pascal and realized that writing books could be an actual job, not just a private dream.
She went on to study English and art history at Columbia University. After college, she stayed in New York and worked as a journalist, writing about beauty, fashion, and culture for magazines and newspapers. That magazine world gave her a close-up view of status, style, gossip, and reinvention, which later became a big part of the energy in many of her novels.
Her first published novel was Cat's Meow, an adult satire about celebrity and image. Then the books took over.
For younger readers, she first found a big audience with contemporary novels like The Au Pairs, which turned Hamptons summers, nanny jobs, friendships, and romantic messes into quick, sharp page-turners. Then came Blue Bloods, the series that mixed New York private-school life with old vampire lore and made Schuyler Van Alen, Jack Force, Mimi Force, and Oliver Hazard-Perry familiar names to a generation of YA readers. She later moved into adult fantasy with Witches of East End, about the Beauchamp family of witches in North Hampton, and that series was adapted for television.
She kept stretching.
One of her biggest later hits was The Isle of the Lost, which opened her Descendants novels and imagined the children of Disney villains before the movies. She has also written historical romance in the Alex and Eliza trilogy, fairy-tale fantasy in books like Cinder & Glass and The Thirteenth Fairy, and contemporary novels such as 29 Dates and The Headmaster's List. Readers usually come to her for pace. Her books tend to move quickly, end chapters at just the right moment, and mix romance, friendship, danger, and secrets without getting bogged down.
Her Filipino background matters to her work too. Fresh Off the Boat drew on her family's immigration story, and Something in Between took on the fear and uncertainty around immigration status through a teen heroine with big academic dreams. More recently, The Encanto's Daughter pulls from Filipino mythology, which feels like another thread in a long career of blending pop storytelling with personal roots.
Outside the books, she has helped build reader communities as a co-founder of YALLWEST and a co-director of YALLFEST, two major young adult book festivals. She has also collaborated with other writers, including Margaret Stohl on Jo & Laurie, and kept moving between age categories and genres without getting stuck in just one lane.
She lives in West Hollywood with her husband and daughter. That feels fitting for a writer who has spent so much of her career writing about ambition, reinvention, love, and what happens when ordinary young people step into worlds that look a little brighter, stranger, or more dangerous than everyday life.
