Series background & context
The Company of Strangers books are built on a strong old-school fantasy idea: a small party of adventurers heading into dangerous ruins for money, survival, and eventually something much bigger. In Melissa McShane's world, magical wars shattered kingdoms long ago and left behind the Empty Lands, a place full of monsters, lost cities, cursed artifacts, and the ruins of old power.
That history matters.
At the center of the series is Sienne, a young wizard who wants to become a scrapper, one of the treasure hunters who risk their lives searching those blighted places. She joins a rough, uneasy team that includes Dianthe, Alaric, Perrin, and Kalanath. They are not a polished heroic band at the start. They are suspicious, wounded, carrying private burdens, and not always sure they even want to trust one another.
What makes the series work is the way that group slowly turns into a real company. The treasure-hunt setup gives the books a steady rhythm of ruined castles, magical threats, strange creatures, and hard choices, but the emotional core is the bond forming between people who begin as strangers. McShane leans into the pleasures of party fantasy here: different skills, clashing personalities, and the sense that survival depends on everyone doing their part.
There is also a larger thread running through the books. The companions are not just taking jobs at random. Alaric's people are enslaved by a wizard, and that problem pulls the team into a longer quest for magical objects, buried truths, and dangerous enemies who are stronger than they first appear. As the series goes on, the missions widen in scale, but the stakes stay personal because the goal is always tied back to the people the company has chosen to fight for.
The tone is adventurous and straightforward, with plenty of travel, ruined places, and magical peril, but it is not only about action. These books spend time on loyalty, obligation, and the cost of choosing your own people. Sienne's growth matters a lot. So does the question of what each member of the company owes to family, homeland, love, and the hard-won trust of the group.
If you like fantasy parties, dangerous ruins, and quest stories where teamwork has to be earned, this is a very easy series to settle into. It starts with a scrapper job and keeps widening outward, one expedition at a time.
