Melissa Caruso writes fantasy that likes sharp politics, dangerous magic, and people who have to keep thinking while everything goes wrong. Her books include the Swords & Fire trilogy, the Rooks & Ruin trilogy, and the newer Echo Archives series.

She has said she wanted to be an author from the time she was very small. At about four, she made a stapled-together dragon field guide in crayon. Around ten, her father gave her a copy of Writer's Market, and the idea of publishing stopped feeling like a magic trick and started feeling like a real path.

Caruso has talked openly about how much work sits between wanting to write and actually getting published. She wrote for years, revised hard, found support in a writers group, and eventually signed with agent Naomi Davis. Her first novel, The Tethered Mage, arrived in 2017 and was shortlisted for the Gemmell Morningstar Award for best fantasy debut.

She has also talked about having worked in software, which seems to feed her liking for systems, structure, and the practical side of impossible worlds. Even when her stories get big and wild, the magic usually has rules, the politics have pressure points, and people still have to live inside the mess they create.

Readers who start with The Tethered Mage usually meet one of Caruso's favorite setups: smart people under pressure, pushed into uneasy alliances. That trilogy follows Amalia Cornaro, a political heir, and Zaira, a fire warlock, through court intrigue, espionage, and questions about how power should be used. In The Obsidian Tower, she shifts to a darker, stranger corner of the same world, with a sealed black tower, broken magic, and a heroine trying to hold together loyalties that do not fit neatly. Then The Last Hour Between Worlds moves into a different universe entirely and leans harder into mystery, layered realities, and a heroine who would really like one night off.

Across the series, certain things keep coming back. Caruso likes fraught friendships, political systems with a human cost, and magic that solves one problem by creating two more. She also likes ensembles, the kind where everyone brings a useful skill and at least one emotional complication. There is often a sense of movement in the books too, from councils and ballrooms to borderlands, castles, ruined places, and realities that get less stable the farther down you go.

There are some lighter personal details in her public bio, and they fit the books better than you might expect. She was born on the summer solstice and went to school in an old mansion with a secret door, which sounds suspiciously on brand for a fantasy writer. She graduated with honors in creative writing from Brown University and later earned an MFA in fiction from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She has also described herself as a tea drinker, LARPer, tabletop gamer, and mom.

These days Caruso lives in Massachusetts with her video game designer husband, two daughters, and assorted pets. That mix of family life, games, and imagination feels like a neat key to her work. The books are full of pressure and peril, but they never lose sight of connection, competence, and the stubborn hope that people can do better than the systems they inherited.
