Melissa Albert Books in Order

Melissa Albert grew up in Illinois with fairy tales close at hand. She read the Grimm stories early, then moved through Andrew Lang’s colored fairy books and novels that put old folklore in stranger, more modern shapes. Those stories stayed with her, especially their danger, odd rules, and the sense that a happy ending might come at a cost.

She studied journalism at the University of Iowa and Columbia College Chicago. Before publishing fiction, Albert worked in the book world as a bookseller, web editor, and writer. She also founded the Barnes & Noble Teen Blog and worked as managing editor of BN.com, spending years talking about books for young readers and helping readers find their next one.

Books were already her day job. Writing fiction became the next step.

While working in publishing, Albert began developing the story that became The Hazel Wood. Published in 2018, it introduces Alice Proserpine, a seventeen-year-old who has spent her life moving from place to place with her mother, Ella. After Ella disappears, Alice is pulled toward the unsettling legacy of her grandmother, Althea Proserpine, and the dark fairy-tale world called the Hinterland.

The book gave Albert room to combine the things she had long loved: folktales, difficult family ties, obsessive readers, hidden worlds, and the uneasy feeling that stories can spill into real life. It was followed by The Night Country, which brings Alice and Ellery Finch into a new crisis after the first book’s events, and Tales from the Hinterland, a collection of the fairy tales that haunt the series.

Albert’s standalone novels keep the darkness but shift the setting. Our Crooked Hearts moves between a teenager’s present-day suburban life and her mother’s witch-filled youth in 1990s Chicago. The Bad Ones turns a string of disappearances in a small town into a supernatural mystery, with a painful teenage friendship at its center. Her adult novel, The Children, follows siblings trying to reckon with the public fantasy version of a childhood that was far less magical in reality.

Her characters often want a clear answer, a safe home, or a clean break from the past. Instead, they find old bargains, family secrets, and memories that don’t stay buried. The settings may include fairy-tale realms, suburbs, city streets, or isolated woods, but the emotional stakes tend to be close to home.

Albert lives in Brooklyn with her family. Her work has been translated into more than twenty languages, and readers who enjoy eerie folklore, tense family stories, and magic with sharp edges will find those threads running through her books.
