Tales from the Hinterland

by Melissa Albert

2021

Step into Althea Proserpine's notorious collection of Hinterland stories. These original, unsettling fairy tales reveal the curses, bargains, cruel magic, and strange rules that shadow the world of The Hazel Wood.

Series background & context

The Hazel Wood series starts with Alice Proserpine, a seventeen-year-old who has spent most of her life on the move with her mother, Ella. Trouble seems to follow them, so settling anywhere has never felt safe. Alice knows little about her grandmother, Althea Proserpine, a reclusive writer whose book of dark fairy tales has drawn a devoted cult following.

When Althea dies and Ella disappears, Alice is forced to confront the family history she has spent years trying to ignore. Her search leads toward the Hazel Wood, Althea’s isolated estate, and toward the Hinterland, the dangerous storybook realm behind Althea’s tales. Alice is practical, angry, and not especially interested in fantasy, which makes the growing evidence of magic all the more unnerving.

She doesn’t make the trip alone. Ellery Finch, a wealthy classmate and expert on Althea’s rare book, becomes Alice’s guide to the strange rules and lore surrounding the Hinterland. Their uneasy partnership gives the first novel both a road-trip mystery and a portal-fantasy feel, while keeping the focus on Alice’s need to find her mother and understand where she comes from.

These are not cozy fairy tales.

The series treats stories as living things, with their own hungers, patterns, and consequences. Familiar fairy-tale elements appear, such as lost children, remote estates, bargains, monsters, and impossible doors, but the tales are original to Albert’s world. The mood is dark, sometimes violent, and full of suspense, with moments of friendship and romance threaded through the fear.

The Night Country broadens the story after Alice’s first journey. It follows Alice in New York City as she tries to build an ordinary life, while Finch faces his own path in the Hinterland. Threats from the fairy-tale world continue to reach into the human one, and the books ask what it means to escape a story that has shaped you.

Tales from the Hinterland works as a companion collection rather than a direct sequel. It gathers the sinister folktales associated with Althea Proserpine’s fictional book, giving readers a closer look at the myths, curses, and strange logic behind the series. Read in publication order, the books offer a complete journey from Alice’s first encounter with the Hinterland to the tales that made that world so hard to leave.
