Author bio
Meg Macy was born in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, and she has spent her life in Michigan. Long before publication, she was the kind of reader who loved old stories, mysteries, and places that made history feel close, from Greenfield Village to Detroit's historic streets. That mix of curiosity and nostalgia still shows up in her fiction, whether she is writing a cozy set in small-town Michigan or a mystery racing west on the transcontinental railroad.
She wanted books early, and not just as a reader. She has said she first dreamed of seeing her own name on a library shelf. Before novels, she published work in children's magazines, wrote freelance pieces, and built a creative life that also included watercolor painting and photography.
That matters.
Macy writes under a few names, and each one points to a slightly different corner of her work. As Meg Mims, she writes historical western suspense. As D.E. Ireland, with Sharon Farrow, she co-created the Eliza Doolittle and Henry Higgins mysteries. As Meg Macy, she has written teddy bear cozies, holiday romances, pet rescue stories, and more recent LGBTQIA+ romantic suspense.
A big turning point came when she earned an M.A. in Writing Popular Fiction from Seton Hill University. She has said that program helped her reach publication, and soon after came Double Crossing, her first published novel. Set in 1869, it follows Lily Granville west after her father's murder, and it won the Spur Award for Best First Novel from Western Writers of America. The follow-up, Double or Nothing, kept the mix of danger, romance, and historical detail going.
Readers who meet her through the Meg Macy name usually start with Bearly Departed. That book launches the Teddy Bear Mystery series in Silver Hollow, Michigan, where Sasha Silverman manages the family teddy bear shop and factory and keeps stumbling into murder. The appeal is easy to see: small-town festivals, family business drama, a warm setting, and just enough trouble to keep things moving. Bear Witness to Murder and the later Teddy Bear books lean into the same strengths.
She also has a clear soft spot for literary play. Under the joint name D.E. Ireland, she and Sharon Farrow took Eliza Doolittle and Henry Higgins from Pygmalion and dropped them into a run of Edwardian mysteries that begins with Wouldn't It Be Deadly. Two books in that series were Agatha Award finalists, which tells you plenty about how well the idea landed. The fun is not just the murders. It is the banter, the class tension, and the way Eliza gets to stay sharp, capable, and very much her own person.
More recently, Macy has opened up another lane with the Love Is Love books, starting with All You Need Is Love. These stories move into Ann Arbor and contemporary romantic suspense, while still holding onto the things that run through much of her work: found family, emotional healing, community pressure, and characters trying to build safer lives for themselves.
Across all those names and genres, a few patterns keep showing up. She likes independent women and complicated loyalties. She likes communities with gossip, memory, and long grudges. She likes animals, holiday settings, and the kind of mystery or romance that lets people earn their way toward trust.
Now she lives in southeastern Michigan. She has written about sharing life with her husband and, more recently, with her cat Mr. Whiskers nearby while she works. It fits. Her books feel built by someone who likes history, homey details, and the satisfying moment when a mess finally starts to make sense.
