Double Books in Order

At heart, the Double books are historical suspense with a western pulse and a mystery engine. The series follows Lily Granville in 1869, just after her father's murder throws her out of an orderly life and into a chase that stretches west across the newly opened transcontinental railroad. If you like your historical fiction with movement, danger, and a heroine who has to toughen up fast, this is the lane.

Lily is not a gunslinger. She starts as a sheltered young woman with money, manners, and very little experience of how ruthless people can be. That is what makes the series work. She has to learn on the move, weighing who to trust, how much courage she really has, and what sort of future she wants once the rules around her stop making sense.

In Double Crossing, Lily heads west after a killer and a missing California mine deed. The railroad setting gives the book much of its shape: strangers packed together, long distances, stolen opportunities, and danger that can follow from one car to the next. Ace Diamond, a wandering Texan who offers protection for a price, brings a rough edge to the story and becomes central to the series' emotional pull.

Double or Nothing picks up with Lily and Ace in California, where an explosion in San Francisco and a murder charge turn their plans upside down. The stakes get tighter, because now the threat is not only physical danger but the possibility of losing each other before they have even built a real life together. Macy keeps the romance present, but the books never stop being mysteries first. Clues, betrayals, and survival stay at the front.

There is also a short piece, Double Trouble, that acts as a prequel. It shifts the focus to Ace and his brother Layne on the prairie before the main series events, giving a little more shape to Ace's background and the life that made him who he is.

These books are not traditional frontier epics, and they are not gentle drawing-room historicals either. They sit in a lively middle ground: fast travel, sharp reversals, a bit of romance, and plenty of tension about money, land, and loyalty in the post Civil War West.
