Series background & context
The All About Eve books follow Luke, a teenage boy still reeling from his dad’s death, and Eve, the girl he spots at the funeral and cannot forget. Written from Luke’s point of view, the trilogy mixes humour, first love and the sharper edges of grief and jealousy.
In Six Steps to a Girl Luke convinces himself that winning Eve will fix everything that feels broken at home. A friend introduces him to a so called six steps method guaranteed to get any girl, and Luke throws himself into the plan. As he changes his image, joins her clubs and gets closer to her, he also has to deal with Eve’s possessive boyfriend and the fallout when his schemes backfire.
Three's a Crowd takes the pair on their first holiday together, staying at the Spanish hotel run by Eve’s dad. Luke imagines sun, freedom and romantic nights; instead he finds an overprotective parent, a flirty musician who seems very interested in Eve and his own bad decisions coming back to bite him. A jealous kiss with someone else turns a dream trip into a mess of guilt and misunderstandings.
In The One and Only the couple are separated when Eve is sent to school in Spain to keep them apart. Back home, lonely and angry, Luke starts to move on with another girl just as Eve decides she wants to take their relationship to the next level and make him her first. The book follows Luke as he tries to untangle desire, loyalty and honesty without losing the girl he still feels is meant for him.
Across the series McKenzie treats teenage feelings with respect. Luke is impulsive, funny and often selfish, but his voice captures the intensity of first love and the way family pressure, grief and insecurity can push you into bad choices. Eve, meanwhile, has her own ambitions and struggles, particularly around how her dad sees her.
This series is a good fit if you are looking for contemporary romance that feels real rather than sugary, where kissing scenes sit alongside arguments about trust, sex and growing up.
