Series background & context
The Flynn series, beginning with Falling Fast, is a contemporary romance sequence that follows River and Flynn, two teenagers from very different backgrounds, as they fall for each other and then try to work out whether love is enough.
River is romantic, sheltered and desperate to experience the kind of relationship she has read about. When she auditions for a school production of Romeo and Juliet and meets Flynn, the intense boy playing Romeo, she thinks she has found it. Flynn, however, carries the weight of a difficult past, family responsibilities and a temper he struggles to control.
Later books show what happens after the rush of first love. In Burning Bright River begins to see the darker side of Flynn’s anger as fights, accusations at school and one explosive incident at a family gathering force her to question whether passion can justify feeling unsafe.
Casting Shadows and Defy the Stars push the pair further, bringing in new opportunities, old secrets and time apart. River and Flynn have to decide who they want to be as individuals as well as who they might be together, and whether they can rebuild trust after serious hurt.
McKenzie writes openly about jealousy, control and the way violence can creep into a relationship alongside real tenderness. The series acknowledges how intoxicating a damaged partner can be while still asking hard questions about boundaries and self respect.
These books are aimed at readers who enjoy romance but also want stories that examine the messy, complicated side of love rather than offering an easy happily ever after.
