Series background & context
Mechanics & Mayhem steps away from federal cases and psychic investigations and heads for the garage. At the center of this series is a close-knit group of mechanics and veterans whose shop becomes a kind of found family headquarters. The books are more contemporary romance than traditional thriller, but Mason does not leave danger entirely behind. Old violence, abusive exes, criminal pasts, and secrets from childhood still have a way of showing up.
Each novel follows one of the men tied to the shop. Vlad introduces former assassin Vlad Aristov, who has traded a gun for a wrench and is trying to build a life while the past refuses to let go. Jude gives a grieving garage owner a painful attraction to the wrong woman at the wrong time. Sully pairs a mechanic who does not trust love with a detective carrying a dark secret. Ross turns down the outside danger and leans harder into sexual tension, with a veteran and his former nun roommate trying to pretend they are only temporary fun.
The garage setting matters more than it might sound. It gives the series a casual, everyday feel that balances the heavier backstories. People are always fixing something, busting each other's chops, showing up when it counts, or pretending they are fine while everybody around them knows better. That sense of friendship and male bonding gives the books warmth, even when the characters are dealing with pretty raw material.
These books are softer than the CORE stories, but not tame.
Mason also uses the series to play with a wider range of romance setups. You get protector energy, forbidden attraction, second chances, roommates, wounded heroes, and women who are not looking for easy happy endings. The suspense pieces are usually more personal than institutional. Instead of a large investigation driving every book, the threat often comes from one person's history catching up with them.
If you want to see what Mason does outside the agency world, this is a good place to go. Mechanics & Mayhem keeps her interest in damaged people and dangerous secrets, but it trades the formal investigation structure for garage talk, friendship, and romances that feel a little looser and warmer. The result is a series with plenty of heat and enough trouble to keep things moving.
