Series background & context

CORE Above the Law is where Mason lets the CORE universe get a little stranger, dirtier, and more off the books. The central team here is A.T.L., short for Above the Law, an underground criminal investigation group that works outside normal channels. That setup gives the series a rougher edge from the start. The investigators are not always polished, and the cases are not the kind anyone can solve by filing the right paperwork.

The first book, Perfectly Twisted, tells you exactly what kind of ride this is. An ex-con turned A.T.L. recruit, Shane Monahan, falls for deputy Beth Price while a copycat killer, a fake reverend, and desecrated bodies turn a Florida case into something grotesque. Perfectly Toxic follows cleaner Mel Scarlet and her husband, Cash Maddox, into a nightmare involving missing homeless men and a scientist experimenting on psychopaths. Perfectly Tortured raises the emotional tension again when Harrison Fairclough targets the sister of a suspected serial killer and then actually falls for her.

Florida matters a lot in this series. The Everglades, heat, isolation, and small communities give these books a swampy, uneasy mood that fits the material. Mason also leans hard into villains with bizarre obsessions and crimes that sound almost unbelievable until the story makes them feel horribly possible. These are not cozy investigations. They are stories about getting too close to people who are deeply wrong.

This branch of CORE is gleefully dark.

What keeps it from turning grim for grimness' sake is the human side of the team. The heroes and heroines here are messy, stubborn, funny, damaged, and often carrying secrets of their own. Because A.T.L. operates in the shadows, the books also spend more time on moral risk, what it means to work outside the law, what corners people cut when the legal route is too slow, and what that does to relationships.

If you like your romantic suspense with sharper edges, outrageous villains, and a strong sense that almost everybody is hiding something, CORE Above the Law is probably the most unhinged corner of Mason's catalog. It is still recognizably part of the CORE world, but it has its own flavor.
