Series background & context

Maysen Jar takes its name from the Bozeman, Montana, restaurant at the center of the opening novel in Devney Perry's connected romance series. The stories concern people trying to move forward while earlier relationships continue to influence their lives. Lists, letters, and a diary provide distinctive ways of connecting what someone feels privately with what another person can see. These written records don't remove the difficulty of speaking honestly. Instead, they make the distance between memory, intention, and present behavior part of the romantic premise.

In The Birthday List, opening the Maysen Jar is meant to mark the start of a new life. The restaurant's owner carries a journal containing a list of youthful ambitions, from taking a karate class to learning an instrument and trying skydiving. Beginning to complete those items turns an emotionally difficult object into a practical plan. Cole Goodman arrives on the restaurant's opening day, bringing an association with a past she has tried to leave behind. His offer of help means that completing the list may require spending time with someone she would rather forget.

A written reminder can become an invitation to reconsider the past.

Letters to Molly gives that idea another form. An old letter appears among ordinary mail, dated more than fifteen years earlier and written after a first date. Further letters arrive over the following weeks, each connected to a moment in a love affair. Their arrival raises questions about both the relationship they describe and the person now choosing to deliver them. The man who originally wrote them isn't the sender. That distinction makes the correspondence an active disruption of the present, rather than merely a private return to memories stored away.

The related novella The Dandelion Diary approaches romance through a child's hope for her divorced father. Katy believes her teacher, Miss Adler, would be an ideal girlfriend for him. She notices his loneliness despite his efforts to conceal it and decides that the adults need help recognizing what seems obvious to her. Her perspective brings family life and affectionate matchmaking into the series' wider interest in second chances. It also offers another contrast between what someone experiences inwardly and what the people close to them are able to notice.

Begin with The Birthday List, followed by Letters to Molly, then the related novella if continuing through the full connected collection. Expect emotionally focused contemporary romance involving grief, previous relationships, and the effort to imagine life differently. The shared world supplies continuity without making every story about the same couple. Across the books, an object intended to hold personal thoughts becomes part of a relationship between people, raising the question of what happens when feelings recorded in one moment are encountered in another.
