Series background & context

This is where Grace Callaway's connected historical world starts, and it begins in a Regency London that is polished on the surface and much messier underneath.

The Mayhem in Mayfair books lean hard into desire, scandal, and the collision between respectable society and the city's rougher edges. Bawdy houses, Vauxhall, shadowy streets, gambling, and whispered reputations all sit right beside titles, fortunes, and proper drawing rooms. If you want the hottest corner of the Callaway universe, this is a strong candidate.

Each book centers on a couple with more going on than simple attraction. Her Husband's Harlot throws a new marriage into crisis when Helena goes after her husband in disguise. Her Wanton Wager turns rescue and revenge into a dangerous seduction. Her Protector's Pleasure pairs a wealthy widow searching for her kidnapped daughter with a policeman who believes in order. Her Prodigal Passion uses a forced marriage to tell a redemption story between a sensible wallflower and a man trying to rebuild himself.

These romances are hot, but they are not careless.

Class tension, hidden trauma, social hypocrisy, and real physical danger keep the books grounded. The heroes are often self-made, bruised, or marked by harsh beginnings. The heroines may look proper from the outside, but they are rarely passive. They scheme, investigate, bargain, and sometimes walk straight into trouble because standing still is worse. That restless energy gives the series its name as much as the setting does.

Mayhem in Mayfair also plants seeds that matter later. Families and side characters introduced here, especially the Kents and their wider circle, ripple forward into Heart of Enquiry and beyond. So even though the series works perfectly well on its own, it also reads like the opening movement of a much bigger fictional world.

If you want to start at the beginning and do not mind high heat, this is the place. The books deliver strong emotion, fast-moving plots, and characters who keep crashing into the limits society tries to set for them. It is an energetic, slightly wicked doorway into Callaway's larger universe.
