Author bio
Grace Callaway grew up on the Canadian prairies, where long stretches indoors helped turn reading into a real habit. Early favorites like Anne of Green Gables and Jane Eyre helped shape the kind of stories she would later love to write herself, stories with strong heroines, big feelings, and a little danger in the air.
During graduate school at the University of Michigan, that reading habit only got stronger. She has said she spent far too much time browsing the romance shelves at the original Borders, which feels like one of those small details that explains a career better than a polished origin story ever could.
Before writing full time, Callaway had a very different professional life. She earned her doctorate and worked in clinical psychology in medical and forensic settings. That background makes sense when you read her fiction. Her books are deeply interested in hidden motives, old wounds, shame, fear, and the private ways people protect themselves.
Then writing stopped being a side interest and became the thing she wanted to do every day.
Her debut novel, Her Husband's Harlot, helped open that door. It was a Golden Heart finalist, and it introduced the blend many readers now expect from her: steamy romance, emotional stakes that actually matter, and a mystery or danger plot strong enough to keep everything moving.
That mix carries through books like The Duke Who Knew Too Much, The Duke Identity, Olivia and the Masked Duke, and One Kiss to Desire. Readers who click with Callaway usually like bold heroines, wounded or morally complicated heroes, family networks that spill across series, and plots where the couple has to deal with something real, not just admit they want each other.
She built a true series ecosystem.
Most of her books are set in Regency and Victorian England, but they do not stay in polite drawing rooms for long. There are spies, underworld figures, lady investigators, self-made men, damaged aristocrats, village legends, and the occasional Gothic chill. Even when the tone is playful, there is usually a secret waiting in the next room.
One of the nice things about her catalogue is that the books are designed to work as standalones even though they connect. You can meet the Kents in one series, the Blackwoods in another, and still enjoy the romance right in front of you. If you read in order, though, the cross-connections are a big part of the fun.
As her bibliography grew, so did the recognition. The Duke Identity won the Daphne du Maurier Award for mystery and suspense, and her books have also earned honors that include the Maggie Award, the Passionate Plume, the Golden Leaf, and the National Excellence in Romance Fiction Award. Her work has also been translated into multiple languages and released in audio.
She writes full time now.
These days she lives in Northern California with her husband, son, and rescue dog. She is also a coffee and Zumba enthusiast, which somehow feels right for a writer whose books mix energy, heat, and a willingness to keep things moving. Spend any time in her fiction and the through line becomes clear: smart women, stubborn men, trouble everywhere, and just enough hope to make the risk worth it.
