Author bio
Max Lucado was born on January 11, 1955, in San Angelo, Texas, and grew up in Andrews, a small west Texas oil town. He was the youngest of four children. His father worked in the oil fields, his mother was a nurse, and he has recalled plenty of childhood time spent either chasing or being chased by his brother Dee.
His teenage years were less settled. Lucado has spoken openly about a hard-partying period and one drunken night that made him take stock of where he was heading. Faith became the turn in the road.
He attended Abilene Christian University, where he studied mass communication and later earned a master's degree in biblical studies. At first, he considered becoming a lawyer. A Bible course and a mission trip changed his plans, setting him on a path toward ministry instead.
His earliest regular writing assignment was modest: a column for a church newsletter in Miami, where he worked as an associate minister. Those short pieces taught him how to put a sermon-sized idea into clear, everyday language. They also supplied material for his first trade book, On the Anvil, published in 1985.
Lucado and his wife, Denalyn, later spent several years in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, helping plant churches. The letters he wrote while they lived there became part of his first manuscript. Returning to Texas brought the family closer to his mother after his father's death, and in 1988 Lucado began serving at Oak Hills Church in San Antonio.
That mix of preaching and writing has shaped nearly everything he has published. His books often begin as sermon series, then become readable reflections for people facing fear, guilt, grief, loneliness, or plain old exhaustion. He has said he writes for people who do not usually read books.
Titles such as When God Whispers Your Name, In the Grip of Grace, Just Like Jesus, Traveling Light, and Anxious for Nothing return to those everyday concerns. His work usually leans on Bible stories, simple images, and direct encouragement rather than debate or technical language.
He also writes widely for children. In the Wemmicks stories, beginning with You Are Special, wooden people learn that their value is not decided by applause, possessions, or criticism. The Hermie & Friends books use a garden full of small creatures to talk about honesty, courage, prayer, friendship, and kindness.
Lucado's books have reached readers in dozens of languages and have sold well over 100 million copies. Awards and bestseller lists are part of that story, but the through line is simpler: he keeps returning to the idea that God's grace is for ordinary people in difficult moments.
He and Denalyn live in San Antonio. They have three grown daughters, and his ministry continues to include writing and teaching at Oak Hills Church.
