Author bio
Matthew Kelly grew up in Sydney, Australia, one of eight boys in a Catholic family. As a teenager he wrestled with restlessness and doubt until a family friend challenged him to sit in a church for ten minutes a day. Those quiet visits slowly awakened a desire for prayer and a more deliberate life with God.
In his late teens Kelly entered business school in Sydney. A professor invited him to give a talk to a small group of students, recorded it, and began passing the tape around. Word spread quickly. By the time he was nineteen he was traveling to parishes and conferences, sharing very down‑to‑earth talks about Catholic faith, decision making, and personal discipline.
Speaking led naturally to writing. Early books like Our Father, Words From God, and A Call to Joy grew out of his own return to prayer and his early retreat work. With The Rhythm of Life he began to reach a much wider audience, introducing the idea that each person is called to become “the‑best‑version‑of‑themselves” by tending body, mind, and soul together.
Kelly’s work has always moved between the inner life and the workplace. In The Dream Manager, Off Balance, and The Culture Solution, he tells stories about real companies wrestling with turnover, burnout, and low morale. His basic claim is simple: organizations only thrive when the people inside them are growing as human beings, not just hitting numbers.
At the same time he has spent decades trying to help ordinary Catholics fall in love with their faith again. Rediscover Catholicism, Rediscover Jesus, Rediscover the Rosary, and The Four Signs of a Dynamic Catholic invite readers back to confession, daily prayer, Scripture, and the Mass in very practical ways. Through the Dynamic Catholic Institute, which he helped found, those books have been placed in pews and parish halls all over the United States.
Many readers first meet Kelly through his writing on everyday spiritual habits. Books like Resisting Happiness, I Heard God Laugh, and Holy Moments focus on small choices: setting aside a few minutes of silence, going to weekday Mass once in a while, or saying yes to one generous impulse at a time. His tone is steady and hopeful, especially for people who feel they have started and stopped the spiritual life many times.
Family life and children’s formation are another thread in his work. In titles such as Building Better Families, Why Am I Here?, I Know Jesus, Good Night Jesus, and the Blessed sacramental programs, he writes for parents, grandparents, teachers, and kids, always returning to the question of how to help the young discover that God is close and interested in their lives.
In recent years Kelly has written more personally about suffering, failure, and second chances. Life is Messy came out of a stretch he has described as the hardest three years of his life and asks whether broken people can become more beautiful and more loving than before. The novel The Rocking Chair Prophet and newer works like 33 Days to Eucharistic Glory continue that mix of storytelling, honesty, and sacramental focus.
Kelly now lives in the United States, near Cincinnati, with his wife, Meggie, and their five children. When he is not writing or on the road speaking, he enjoys golf, music, reading, and quiet time with his family. His books and talks keep circling back to the same conviction: that God is already working in the mess and possibility of ordinary days, inviting each person to become who they were meant to be.
