Author bio
Mary Berry was born on 24 March 1935 in Bath, in the west of England. Long before most people outside the UK knew her face, she was already doing the work that matters most in food writing, testing recipes, spotting what can go wrong, and explaining the fix in plain language.
She grew up in Bath and went to Bath High School. At 13 she caught polio and spent months in hospital. The illness left her with a curved spine and a weaker left hand, something she’s spoken about as a hard experience that also made her determined to make the most of opportunities.
Cooking turned into a real direction once she found domestic science and had a teacher who took her seriously. After school she trained in catering at the Bath School of Home Economics, then went on to study at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris. It gave her a strong technical base, but her focus stayed on food you can actually cook at home.
She’s always been more interested in what works than what looks clever.
Before the cookbooks piled up, she worked in food jobs that involved developing and demonstrating recipes, the unglamorous side of the industry. In 1966 she became the cookery editor of Housewife magazine, and later moved to Ideal Home, where she helped shape the kind of practical, recipe-led features that many home cooks still rely on. Her first cookbook, The Hamlyn All Colour Cookbook, appeared in 1970, and it opened the door to a long publishing life. Over the decades she’s written dozens of books, often aimed at making everyday cooking feel doable, whether that’s batch cooking, baking, or getting a roast dinner on the table. In the 1990s she also ran Aga Workshops from home, teaching Aga owners how to get the best out of their cookers.
Her recipes have a steady, reassuring feel.
If you’re drawn to baking, books like Mary Berry's Baking Bible and Mary Berry's Foolproof Cakes lean into the basics that make cakes and pastries work. For a broader reset of your kitchen skills, Mary Berry's Cookery Course is built like a hands-on lesson plan, with classic dishes that teach technique as you go.
Television widened her audience. She made her first TV series in the early 1970s, and later became a familiar face across British food programming. From 2010 to 2016 she judged The Great British Bake Off, where her calm notes and sharp eye for the bake helped turn the show into a weekly ritual for many viewers.
Away from the cameras, she married Paul Hunnings in 1966 and they had three children. In 1989, the family lost one of their sons in a car accident, a private tragedy she has spoken about with honesty. In 2012 she was appointed a CBE, and she later received a damehood in the 2020 Birthday Honours, recognising her work in broadcasting, food, and charity.
She’s still working. Alongside new TV projects, she continues to publish books, often with her long-time collaborator Lucy Young. Her 2013 memoir, Recipe for Life, pulls back the curtain on the career behind the cakes, and the family life that shaped how she cooks.
