Where should I start?
If you want a sci-fi spin on fairy tales: Cinder → Scarlet → Cress → Fairest → Winter.
If you prefer superheroes and secret identities: Renegades → Archenemies → Supernova.
For a dark, atmospheric fantasy: Gilded → Cursed.
For a standalone villain origin story: Heartless.
Author bio
Marissa Meyer has always been a storyteller. In fact, her parents say that “story” was one of the very first words she ever learned to say. Born and raised in Tacoma, Washington, she has spent her life surrounded by books and rain. She still lives in her hometown today, balancing her writing career with raising twin daughters and spending time with her husband.
Long before she was a bestseller, Meyer was learning the ropes in a very modern way. She didn't just quietly write in a journal; she dove into the lively world of fanfiction.
As a teenager, she wrote under the pen name Alicia Blade. She was obsessed with the anime Sailor Moon and ended up writing over forty stories set in that universe. This wasn't just a hobby to pass the time. It was her training ground.
Writing fanfiction taught her how to build a plot that kept readers coming back for more. It also taught her how to handle feedback from strangers on the internet, a skill that is incredibly useful for a professional author.
She eventually took a more traditional path to education. She attended Pacific Lutheran University to study creative writing and later went to Pace University for publishing. After graduating, she worked on the business side of books. She spent time as an editor and a typesetter, helping other people get their stories ready for the world.
But she never stopped writing her own.
Her big break came from a writing contest. The prompt was simple but strange: put a classic fairy tale character into a futuristic setting. Meyer immediately pictured Cinderella, but with a sci-fi twist. She imagined a girl who wasn't just scrubbing floors, but one who had robotic parts.
That spark of an idea eventually turned into Cinder.
Cinder became her debut novel and the first chapter of The Lunar Chronicles. The series was a huge hit, blending spaceships and cyborgs with the magic of old fairy tales. It allowed Meyer to quit her day job and focus on writing full-time.
Since then, she has become famous for taking stories everyone knows and flipping them upside down. She loves to explore the "what if" scenarios in familiar worlds.
In Heartless, she looked at the Queen of Hearts and asked a tragic question: how did she become so angry? It gave a famous villain a heartbreaking backstory. In her Renegades trilogy, she moved away from magic and into the world of superheroes. However, she kept her signature complexity, exploring the gray areas between heroes and villains rather than just showing a simple battle of good versus evil.
Her books are known for having large, complex casts of characters and high-stakes romances that keep readers up late.
When she isn't working on her next deadline, she is usually helping other writers find their way. She hosts a podcast called The Happy Writer. On the show, she interviews other authors about their creative lives, their struggles, and how they stay inspired.
It is a fitting role for someone whose first word was "story." From Sailor Moon fanfiction to the top of the bestseller lists, Marissa Meyer has spent her life proving that old tales always have new secrets to reveal.
