Series background & context
Marissa Meyer built her career on cyborgs, superheroes, and futuristic lunatics, but with the Gilded duology, she takes a sharp turn into gothic horror. While she is no stranger to retelling fairy tales, this project dives deep into the grim roots of German folklore. It reimagines the story of Rumpelstiltskin, taking a tale that is usually about greed and turning it into a complex narrative about survival, forgotten history, and the power of names.
The story centers on Serilda, a miller’s daughter who has been marked by the god of lies. In her village, she is something of an outcast, known for weaving elaborate, impossible tales that nobody believes. It is a lonely existence, but her quick tongue is usually just a nuisance rather than a danger. That changes on the night of the full moon, when she tries to save two magical creatures from a hunting party by telling a particularly dangerous lie.
She claims she can spin common straw into gold.
Unfortunately, the leader of that hunting party is the Erlking, a sinister figure from legend who steals children and commands the Wild Hunt. He drags Serilda to his crumbling, haunted castle and locks her in a dungeon filled with straw. The command is simple and terrifying: she must prove her boast is true by morning, or she will be killed. Since Serilda possesses no actual magic, her situation seems hopeless until a mysterious boy appears in her cell.
This boy, whom she calls Gild, is a poltergeist haunting the castle walls. He is the one who can actually perform the impossible task, but his help comes with the traditional folklore requirement of a payment. What starts as a desperate business transaction slowly shifts into something much deeper. As the full moons pass and the Erlking’s demands grow more impossible, Serilda and Gild find themselves unraveling a mystery that ties their fates together in unexpected ways.
The atmosphere here is distinct from Meyer’s earlier, shinier futuristic worlds. It feels cold, foggy, and dangerous. The narrative explores the heavy price of magic and the difference between a malicious lie and a story meant to protect. It also leans heavily into the darker side of the original Brothers Grimm stories, featuring ghosts, curses, and grim spectacles that raise the stakes far above a simple spinning wheel.
Comprised of two hefty volumes, Gilded and Cursed, the series offers a complete story arc that moves at a deliberate pace. It gives the author space to fully flesh out the lore of the Wild Hunt and the pantheon of gods that oversee this world. By the end, the simple fairy tale setup has expanded into an epic struggle to break generational curses and reclaim stolen identities.
