Series background & context

The Maple Valley novels shift the action to a different corner of Rebecca Deel’s shared universe, trading Otter Creek’s town square for a valley anchored by the Rocking M Ranch and the Montgomery family. The stories still deliver tense romantic suspense, but the backdrop is ranch land, small town law enforcement, and a close family of brothers who can call on Fortress Security when trouble hits.

The series begins with Security Breach. Emma Tucker has spent more than a year in witness protection, running from the serial killer who murdered her family. When the system fails her, she turns to David Montgomery, now sheriff but once a Navy SEAL who loved her long before tragedy struck. Their fight to stay ahead of a ruthless killer sets up Maple Valley’s blend of family loyalty, rural setting, and national level threats.

Each book then focuses on a different Montgomery or someone tied closely to the family. Marine’s Mission follows Owen Montgomery, a Marine who will do anything to keep Gigi Warren alive when she lands in the crosshairs of a terrorist group. Conspiracy centers on Police Chief Blair Hoffman and Deputy Elliot Montgomery as they work to find out who set up an ambush and why someone wants Blair permanently out of the way. In Buried Secrets, Mindy Long is trying to give her nephew a safe home and run a business, only to be dragged back into a violent past that Deputy Levi Montgomery refuses to let claim her life. Deadly Trap pairs Brynn Gilbert, a landscaper who thought she had left danger behind, with Caleb Montgomery, a Fortress operative and county deputy determined to keep her breathing.

Maple Valley itself feels like the kind of rural town where people wave from pickup trucks and gather at the diner after church, but the stakes are never small. Assassination plots, terrorist cells, and personal vendettas push the characters to the edge of what they can handle. The Montgomery brothers and their extended clan are fiercely protective, and readers see that protectiveness stretched as they face threats that hit both their community and the country they serve.

Tone wise, the books match Deel’s other work. The romance is sweet but emotionally intense, the violence is present but not gratuitous, and there is a steady undercurrent of faith, resilience, and family commitment. Characters from Fortress Security and Otter Creek drop in, reinforcing that all three series are pieces of the same larger story world.

For readers who enjoy romantic suspense with cowboys, deputies, and former SEALs in a mountain valley setting, Maple Valley offers a satisfying blend. You can start with the first book or jump to a Montgomery brother who catches your interest, knowing each novel wraps its main story while still building the larger tapestry of the series.
