Series background & context
The Fortress Security books drop you into a world where former special forces operators, federal agents, and cops have traded uniforms for a private security badge. Based in Nashville, Fortress Security is founded by Brent Maddox, a Navy SEAL who builds a company around people who know what it means to go into harm’s way and come home again.
The series opens with Midnight Escape, where writer Brenna Mason is searching for her missing sister and crosses paths with Eli Wolfe, a haunted former SEAL turned private investigator. Their hunt for a human trafficking ring sets the tone for the books that follow: high stakes, tight timelines, and a blend of tactical action and quiet, everyday courage.
From there the cast widens. Some stories follow operatives like Zane Murphy, a SEAL injured by an IED who now fights in cyberspace while still being willing to go into the field when someone he cares about is threatened. Others focus on snipers, medics, and tech specialists, or on civilians whose ordinary lives collide with extraordinary danger, like coffee shop owners, preschool teachers, diplomats, genealogists, and wedding dress designers.
At the center is the Fortress team itself. Operatives move between black ops missions overseas and protection work closer to home, often in cooperation with an elite Delta unit and local law enforcement. Many missions expose organized crime, human traffickers, terrorists, serial killers, or corrupt power brokers in Washington, D.C. Settings range from Nashville streets and Tennessee small towns to tropical resorts, Mexican compounds, and remote mountain hideouts, but the throughline is always the same: a tight group of warriors who refuse to abandon each other.
Romance grows naturally out of that pressure cooker. Each book pairs one operative with a heroine who has her own skills and scars. The stories stay "clean" in content, yet the emotional stakes are high. Characters carry trauma from past missions, abusive relationships, or childhood wounds, and part of the tension comes from watching people who are trained to protect everyone else finally learn to let somebody protect them in return.
The Fortress Security universe is tightly linked to Rebecca Deel’s Otter Creek and Maple Valley series. Operatives show up in those small towns to help local law enforcement, and readers see couples from earlier books reappear as mentors, backup, or simply friends around a kitchen table. You can read each Fortress book as a stand alone, but following the series in order lets you watch the Shadow team, the Durango Delta unit, and other recurring groups grow into a found family.
If you like stories where black ops warriors take on human traffickers, stalkers, kidnappers, and terrorists while falling in love with women who refuse to be victims, Fortress Security delivers that mix. The tone stays hopeful even when the danger is intense, and every mission is ultimately about more than stopping a villain, it is about giving wounded people a chance at a safer, wider life.
