Author bio

Heather Burnside grew up in Gorton, a working class district of Manchester, before moving as a teenager to one of the city's toughest estates. The area later became notorious for gang activity, shootings and drug related crime, and it left a deep mark on her.

Those streets, and the people who lived on them, would eventually fuel the gritty crime stories she is known for today.

Before she ever wrote about gangs and estates, Burnside followed a very different path. She studied credit management, worked in credit control for several years and became a graduate member of the Institute of Credit Management. Writing was something she fitted around a demanding day job.

After taking a career break to raise her two children, she decided not to return to that office life. Instead she enrolled on a creative writing course in Manchester, earned a writing diploma and began placing articles in popular magazines. To help pay the bills she set up a small writing services business, offering copywriting, proofreading and even ghostwriting for non fiction projects.

Crime fiction had always been lurking in the background though. In 2014 she published Slur, the first book in what became the Riverhill trilogy, about an ordinary young woman who wakes to find herself accused of murder on a rough estate. The book drew heavily on Burnside's memories of growing up in inner city Manchester, and readers responded to the mix of tense plotting and down to earth characters.

Her next major project, the Manchester Trilogy, dug even deeper into gangland Manchester. Across Born Bad, Blood Ties and Vendetta, she follows siblings Adele and Peter Robinson from a brutal childhood into a world of nightclubs, protection rackets and prison cells. The books focus less on police procedure and more on what violence and loyalty do to a family over time.

Burnside then turned her attention to the women who live on the edges of that criminal world in The Working Girls series. Starting with The Mark and continuing through Ruby, Crystal, Amber and Sapphire, each novel centres on a different woman connected to Manchester's red light districts, from a respectable journalist who crosses the wrong pimp to streetwise sisters trying to survive the care system. The stories are tough but always interested in how people hold on to dignity, friendship and hope.

More recently she has written a run of standalone but interconnected thrillers set around the same city streets. Guilt revisits a former sex worker who has rebuilt her life as businesswoman Laura Sharples, only to find someone targeting her shops. Blackmail focuses on Beth, a woman whose life is shattered when her husband twists a buried trauma into a weapon. Redemption and Vengeance pick up the stories of young men and women on deprived estates and in city centre clubs, asking what happens when ordinary people push back against the gangsters who control their lives.

Across all of these books, Burnside draws on a wide range of influences, from crime thrillers to memoir and social history, but the biggest influence remains Manchester itself. Her novels pay close attention to estates, back streets and small everyday details, which is why even the wildest twists feel rooted in real experience.

She now writes full time from her home in Manchester, where she shares everyday life with her two grown up children and keeps dreaming up new ways to put her characters in trouble.
