Series background & context

The Make Me Stay books are a second-chance romance built on history, heartbreak, and the kind of love that never really leaves even when the people do. The series follows Avery Castle and Donovan Hardy across Make Me Stay and Make Me Stay II.

Avery and Donovan's bond starts young. He learns sign language so he can speak to her, because Avery is deaf and too many people around her have treated that as a problem instead of simply part of her life. That detail shapes the whole series. These books are about being seen clearly, not just desired.

Then life gets in the way, hard. Family meddling, separation, pregnancy loss, and years of pain turn what could have been a straightforward reunion into something heavier. When Avery and Donovan are finally forced back into each other's orbit, they are not picking up where they left off. They are trying to survive what happened in between.

That is what gives this series its pull. The chemistry is strong, but the emotional engine is grief. Donovan is not just trying to win Avery back. He is trying to prove that the story she was left with is not the whole truth. Avery, meanwhile, has to decide whether loving him again is brave or foolish.

The second book stays with the consequences. It is about rebuilding, not just reconnecting. Family obligations, future plans, and the practical work of trust all matter as much as the attraction.

Readers who want a romance with deep history, real emotional damage, and a heroine whose experience of the world is central to the story will probably click with this series. Read both books in order. They are one long emotional conversation.
