Series background & context

The Black Queen, Dark Knight books are a royal suspense romance with a darker, stranger edge than many of Amarie Avant's other series. The story runs through Black Queen, Dark Knight and Black Queen Dark Knight II, and it follows Mikayla and Jagger through love, danger, and the weight of a crown.

Mikayla is not just choosing a man. She is also carrying duty, expectation, and the threat that comes with power. Jagger is the opposite of safe. He is the kind of hero who feels more like a weapon than a comfort at first, and that is exactly why the chemistry lands. He is fierce, possessive, and fully ready to wreck anyone who comes for her.

That gives the first book its rhythm. Attraction is there, but so are enemies, hidden agendas, and the simple problem that love gets messy when public power is involved.

The second book widens the threat. Mikayla is trying to protect her future and her country at the same time, while Jagger stays fixed on protecting her no matter who gets in the way. This is also the point where the series starts folding in paranormal and supernatural elements, which gives the overall story a more unusual feel than a straight royal romance.

So what should you expect. A lot of pressure. A protective dark hero. A queen who cannot afford to make careless choices. And a story that treats romance and danger as part of the same storm.

These books are best read back to back. Book two builds on the political and emotional fallout from book one, and the couple makes the most sense when you stay with their whole arc.
