The Magic in Manhattan books are paranormal historical romances set in an alternate 1925 New York, where hidden magic runs beneath speakeasies, antiques shops, and high society drawing rooms. The trilogy follows Arthur Kenzie, a former WWI soldier whose job is tracking dangerous supernatural relics, and Rory Brodigan, a psychometric who can read objects with a touch and would really prefer not to use that gift at all.

That setup gives the series two pleasures at once. You get the glamour and motion of Prohibition-era Manhattan, but you also get a shadow world of magical artifacts, secret networks, and people trying to keep very old powers from wrecking ordinary lives. Therin uses the city well. The bustle, class divides, and period detail all matter, and the books feel rooted in place rather than dressed up in it.

At the heart of the story, though, is Arthur and Rory. Arthur is steady, capable, and used to carrying too much on his own. Rory is wary, funny, and isolated by the danger of his own ability. Their romance grows out of partnership, trust, and the slow realization that each man sees the other more clearly than he expected. If you like opposites who meet in the middle, this series does that very well.

Across Spellbound, Starcrossed, and Wonderstruck, the stakes widen from one dangerous amulet to a much larger fight over relics, power, and who gets to control either. The trilogy keeps the same central couple, so it really works best in order. Each book gives Arthur and Rory a new external threat, but the emotional arc stays just as important: class tension, fear, old loyalties, and the question of how to build a life together when the world keeps asking for sacrifice.

The tone lands somewhere between adventure story, mystery, and heartfelt romance. There are chases, conspiracies, and magical showdowns, but there is also plenty of banter, tenderness, and found-family energy around the edges.
