Author bio
Maggie Toussaint grew up in coastal Georgia, where she developed a lasting feel for small communities, family history, old houses, waterways, and the secrets people keep. Books were an early escape hatch. She has said that opening one could send her imagination somewhere else, and the wish to write was there from childhood.
Life got busy first.
Toussaint went to college, married, raised a family, and worked in science. Her jobs included health and safety work, chemistry, technical writing, geology-related reporting, and aquatic toxicology. She later said that writing about science was useful, but it did not quiet the urge to make up stories.
She began collecting ideas on scraps of paper, clipping articles, and saving pictures that might someday become characters or settings. A turning point came when she wrote about her own coastal Georgia childhood and how different it was from her daughters' suburban upbringing. She contacted relatives and old friends, mostly by letter, and eventually realized she had written a book.
That first project, Remembering, did not find a traditional publisher right away. A cousin who edited a weekly newspaper offered to run it one chapter at a time. Readers responded, the paper collected the installments as a book, and its 500-copy print run sold through. Toussaint's mother-in-law supplied the illustrations.
It was a start, not an overnight switch.
Toussaint took writing classes, wrote romances that she now calls early learning efforts, joined writers' groups and critique circles, and edited a writing newsletter. She gradually moved out of her science career and into freelance work, including technical writing and reporting, while continuing to build her fiction career.
Her books move between cozy mystery, romantic suspense, paranormal mystery, and science fiction. In for a Penny introduces Cleopatra Jones, a Maryland accountant and amateur sleuth whose golf game puts her near a murder. The Dreamwalker books, beginning with Gone and Done It, follow Baxley Powell, a landscaper and pet sitter who can reach the dead in dreams. Seas the Day brings readers to Shell Island, Georgia, where caterer River Holloway is known for finding what others have lost.
Romantic suspense is another steady part of the catalog. The Mossy Bog novels, including Muddy Waters, Hot Water, and Rough Waters, pair romance with dangerous investigations in a Southern town. Under the name Rigel Carson, she writes the near-future Guardian of Earth novels, starting with G-1. Under the name Valona Jones, she writes the Magic Candle Shop Mysteries, set around psychic twins in Savannah.
Puzzles are the thread running through it all.
Toussaint has been a finalist for Georgia Author of the Year more than once and has received Readers' Choice, EPIC, and Silver Falchion awards. She lives in coastal Georgia and continues to draw on its marshes, heritage, old trees, close-knit towns, and memorable local characters.
