Madam of Espionage Books in Order

Carol K. Carr’s Madam of Espionage series follows India Black, the capable owner of Lotus House, a high-class brothel in Victorian London. India has built a business on her own terms, which means keeping clients happy, protecting her employees, and knowing when a powerful man is about to cause trouble. She expects complications. She does not expect to become useful to the British government.

The series begins with India Black, when the death of a War Office official at Lotus House leaves India tangled up in missing military papers and international spying. French, a British agent, gives her little choice but to help. India’s nerve, local knowledge, and ability to pass through spaces closed to official agents make her a surprisingly effective partner.

She is nobody’s obedient secret weapon.

India and French make an uneasy team throughout the books. He has government connections and a habit of appearing when danger is already close. She has a strong sense of self-preservation, a talent for reading people, and no patience for being talked down to. Their attraction is part of the ongoing story, but so are the secrets and arguments that come with working in a dangerous business.

Victorian Britain matters as much as any character. The novels move from London’s back streets and drawing rooms to Balmoral in Scotland, with a later novella taking India and French to Paris. Political worries, class rules, and public respectability all create opportunities for disguise, deception, and threats that cannot always be handled in public.

Each main novel gives India a fresh investigation while building on her changing role as an occasional spy. In India Black and the Widow of Windsor, she goes undercover among household staff to help stop an attack on Queen Victoria. India Black and the Shadows of Anarchy asks her to infiltrate the Dark Legion, an anarchist group behind a run of killings. In India Black and the Gentleman Thief, a murder and a stolen shipping bill lead back to someone from India’s past.

There are also two short works for readers who want more of her world. India Black and the Rajah’s Ruby looks back at India before Lotus House, when a stolen jewel changes her prospects. India Black in the City of Light is a compact Paris mission involving a Russian agent and a prisoner exchange.

Expect historical mystery with espionage, dry humor, romantic tension, and a heroine who stays alert when everyone around her is playing a game.
