Carol K Carr Books in Order

Carol K. Carr writes historical mysteries set against the politics and street life of Victorian England. Before she began publishing fiction, she worked as an attorney and corporate executive, then brought a practical eye for people, work, and power to the Madam of Espionage books.

Carr is originally from Missouri. She has also lived for long stretches in Washington, D.C., Texas, and California, before settling back in the Ozarks with her husband and two German shepherds.

The wish to write started early. Carr has said she was already absorbed by books at eight or nine, but came from a family that put a high value on what it considered real work. She went to law school, practiced for a couple of decades, and built a career outside publishing.

Writing came later, after she left her job in her mid-forties intending to take a year off and enjoy herself. Instead, she wrote a novel. Then she wrote another.

Neither early attempt made it into print, but Carr kept at it. India Black was her third novel, and it became her debut when it was published in 2011. The book introduced a London brothel owner with a sharp tongue, a stubborn streak, and an unwanted new role in British intelligence.

Carr’s long interest in British history helped shape the series. A biography of Elizabeth I first pulled her toward English history as a child, and she later read widely about Britain, its empire, and the public figures of the Victorian period. She has also traveled to places tied to that history, including Sydney, Durban, Singapore, and Zanzibar.

The India Black stories use that research without losing sight of their heroine. In India Black, missing military papers draw India into a dangerous contest between British and Russian agents. India Black and the Widow of Windsor sends her to Scotland to protect Queen Victoria, while India Black and the Shadows of Anarchy puts her in the path of a violent underground group. The shorter India Black and the Rajah’s Ruby looks back to an earlier chapter in India’s life, before she owns Lotus House.

The books return to questions of independence, money, social rules, and who gets to hold power. India knows Victorian London’s rough edges as well as its polished rooms, and she is rarely impressed by the men who assume they can order her about.

Carr lives in the Missouri Ozarks with her husband and two German shepherds. Her fiction pairs historical settings with mysteries, espionage, and a heroine who prefers a clear-eyed plan to waiting around for rescue.
