Warrior's Woman
by Johanna Lindsey
1990
On high-tech Kystran in 2139, security officer Tedra De Arr flees a tyrant and seeks help on a distant, primitive world. There she challenges Challen Ly-San-Ter, a towering barbarian warlord who defeats her in combat and in bed, dragging her into a battle to free her home planet.
Series background & context
The Ly-San-Ter Family series takes Lindsey’s love of big, dramatic romance off Earth and into deep space. These books read like historical adventures transplanted to other planets: warrior cultures, rigid codes of honor, and heroines who arrive with very different ideas about freedom and power.
The opener, Warrior’s Woman, is set in the year 2139 on the technologically advanced planet Kystran. Tedra De Arr is a top security officer who can outfight any man in her world—but that doesn’t help when a tyrant seizes power. With only a wisecracking computer companion for company, she flees to a distant planet in search of help and runs headlong into Challen Ly-San-Ter, a barbarian warlord who sees women as spoils rather than equals.
Their clash is both cultural and personal. Tedra is used to gadget-heavy cities; Challen’s people value strength and obedience above all. Forced to become his “warrior’s woman” while they plan to retake her world, she pushes back against his rules even as desire pulls them together.
The second book follows their daughter Shanelle, who has grown up between advanced tech and her father’s stark warrior code. Terrified of ending up in a marriage like her parents’ early years, she swears she’ll never accept a warrior as her lifemate. Of course, the man she can’t stop thinking about is a battle-hardened stranger determined to claim her. Their story ranges across planets and space stations, adding political intrigue and a simmering gender war to the family drama.
In Heart of a Warrior, the focus shifts partly back to Earth. Brittany Callaghan, a statuesque Californian with a practical streak, is startled when a towering “Viking” turns up in her small town claiming to be a barbarian from another world. Dalden Ly-San-Ter needs her help on a mission, and she agrees, half disbelieving him—until she’s pulled into a much larger universe.
Taken together, the Ly-San-Ter books keep the core Lindsey ingredients: alpha heroes, sharp-tongued heroines, and intense attraction. The twist is the setting, with starships, alien marketplaces, and sentient computers standing in for ballrooms and manor houses. The series is best read in order, since family relationships and past events ripple through each book.
