Red Jacket

by Joseph Heywood

2012

In 1913, former Rough Rider Lute Bapcat becomes one of Michigan’s first civil-service game wardens and is posted to the copper town of Red Jacket. As a violent labor strike escalates, he investigates poisoned streams, slaughtered deer, and sabotage that seem aimed at starving miners off the land.

Series background & context

The Lute Bapcat novels step back to the 1910s, when Michigan was just beginning to think seriously about conservation. Lute is an orphan, former cowboy, and Rough Rider who is recruited, with a nudge from Theodore Roosevelt, to become one of the state’s first salaried game wardens.

His territory is the Keweenaw and the western Upper Peninsula, a landscape of deep hardwood forests, copper mines, new immigrant communities, and remote logging camps. Bapcat is most at ease alone in the woods, yet his job keeps dragging him into the center of political and economic fights.

In Red Jacket he arrives during the bitter 1913 copper strike. While mine owners and union organizers battle in the streets, someone is poisoning streams, salting wells, and leaving decapitated deer to rot. Bapcat’s task is to protect wildlife and the people who depend on it while the town barrels toward the Italian Hall disaster.

The second book, Mountains of the Misbegotten, sends him south to Ontonagon County to find a missing deputy game warden. The search leaves Bapcat badly wounded and pulls him into a scheme to capture and sell live bears to distant zoos, a plan tied to an outlaw from his own orphanage days and the rough country around the Porcupine Mountains.

In Beyond Beyond the horizon widens even more. A year after a close friend vanishes on a secret assignment to Russia, Bapcat and young sidekick Jordy are summoned by Roosevelt and sent across the Atlantic to help. They ride trains and sleds through a collapsing empire, chasing rumors of the missing man and of the deposed tsar while civil war explodes around them.

Across the series Bapcat is always the same quiet, stubborn presence. He believes game belongs to everyone, not just companies or the well connected, and he measures people by how they treat the land and the vulnerable. The books mix historical figures and real events with eccentric locals, courtroom tangles, and hard travel on foot, horse, and canoe.

Read together, the Lute Bapcat mysteries trace how law, labor, and conservation collided in the early twentieth century. They feel like frontier adventures and historical crime novels at once, with plenty of gun smoke, snow, and moral gray areas.
