This is one of Karina Halle’s more emotional contemporary corners. That makes the series feel very intimate. The tension is often emotional before it is external. The heat, the pace, the social energy, and the sense of being far from home all push the stories forward.

The Forbidden Man fits as a later, looser companion. It shifts to Madrid and a different romance, but it keeps the same interest in desire that feels a little risky, adults trying to begin again, and the way a place can crack open parts of a person they thought were shut for good.

So while this is not a single continuing plot in the same way as some of Halle’s fantasy or paranormal series, it still hangs together. If you come to these books looking for cross cultural romance, complicated choices, and settings that feel sunny on the surface while everything underneath is getting messier, this is the right shelf.
