Series background & context

The Love, California books are Jan Moran's linked contemporary romances about a close circle of stylish, ambitious women whose lives move between Beverly Hills glamour and high-pressure work. These books are earlier than the beach-town series, and they have a different feel. The setting is more urban and international, the careers are flashier, and the plots lean more openly into suspense, business conflict, and glamorous travel.

Think girlfriends, passports, and high-pressure careers.

The series opens with Flawless, then continues through Beauty Mark, Runway, Essence, Style, and Sparkle. Each book focuses on a different woman, but the same friend group keeps turning up, so the stories feel linked even when the central romance changes. That structure works well because Moran is interested in women who are not starting from nowhere. They already have demanding jobs, social lives, complicated histories, and very clear ideas about what success should look like. The trouble is that life rarely follows those plans.

A lot of the appeal is in the world itself. These characters move through beauty, fashion, design, hospitality, and luxury business, and Moran writes those spaces with insider interest rather than distant sparkle. The books head to Paris, Spain, Ireland, the South of France, Monaco, Malta, New York, Malibu, Copenhagen, and Sydney, but the travel is not just postcard scenery. Each place puts pressure on the heroine in a different way, whether through family expectations, career risk, hidden danger, or a romance that arrives at exactly the wrong moment.

The tone is stylish, but the books are not frothy. Beauty Mark brings in legal and professional jeopardy. Runway mixes fashion ambition with sabotage and old family shadows. Essence leans into beauty-world tensions and attraction in the South of France. Even when the surfaces gleam, there is usually some real instability underneath, and that helps the books feel grounded.

What also carries the series is friendship. These women understand one another's work, ambitions, and mistakes in a way outsiders often do not. That gives the books a nice sense of continuity. A heroine may be center stage in one novel and a trusted friend in the next. Readers who enjoy seeing familiar characters reappear, older and wiser or simply facing a fresh mess, will probably like how the series is built.

If Summer Beach is Moran in comforting coastal mode, Love, California is Moran in glossy contemporary mode. The books still care about second chances and emotionally satisfying endings, but they get there through sharper careers, faster jet-setting, and a little more danger along the way. If you want romance with fashion, beauty, travel, and women trying to hold onto both love and self-respect, this is the Jan Moran series to pick up first.
