Author bio

Jan Moran was born in Austin, Texas, and she has never entirely lost that Texas identity, even after years of living near the beach in Southern California with her family. That mix of roots and reinvention runs through her fiction. Her books are often full of women rebuilding a life, a business, or a family in places that feel both beautiful and a little hard won.

Before she became known for beach-town series and historical family sagas, Moran built a career in beauty and fragrance. She studied at the University of Texas at Austin, earned an MBA from Harvard Business School, attended the UCLA Writers Program, and spent 100 days sailing around the world on Semester at Sea. She has also lived on the East Coast and worked in places like Paris, Hong Kong, and Canada, which helps explain why her books move so easily between California comfort and far-flung glamour.

She did not come to fiction empty-handed.

Her early publishing life included nonfiction books such as Fabulous Fragrances, Fabulous Fragrances II, and Vintage Perfumes. She also wrote about beauty, fragrance, and travel, and brought that industry knowledge into her later novels. In Moran's fiction, perfume, wine, chocolate, fashion, and design do not feel like decorative extras. They feel like part of the working lives of her characters.

Her first linked series, the books now grouped as Love, California, follows a circle of stylish, ambitious women whose lives stretch from Beverly Hills to Paris, Ireland, Spain, the South of France, New York, Copenhagen, and Sydney. Titles like Flawless, Beauty Mark, and Runway show an early version of what Moran keeps returning to, smart women under pressure, strong female friendships, complicated careers, and romance that arrives at inconvenient moments.

Reinvention is one of her favorite subjects.

A lot of readers first find her through Seabreeze Inn and the long-running Summer Beach novels, or through Marina Moore's branch of that world in Coral Cottage. Those books are warm and easy to sink into, but they are not weightless. Moran likes old houses, family history, second chances, community gossip, and women figuring out what they want in the middle of life, not just at the beginning. Her Summer Beach books grew far beyond their original plan, and later crossovers in Coral Cottage and Crown Island gave her even more room to build connected coastal communities.

She also writes historical family sagas, including The Winemakers, The Chocolatier, Hepburn's Necklace, Life is a Cabernet, and The Perfumer, first published as Scent of Triumph. These books keep her interest in women at work and families under strain, but place those stories inside richly researched worlds of wine, chocolate, perfume, fashion, and old Hollywood. Even when the settings move to Napa, Italy, Paris, or wartime Europe, Moran stays close to emotion and to the practical choices her characters have to make. The Summer Beach series and The Winemakers have both been optioned for television, and her work has been translated into a number of languages.

These days, she continues to write from Southern California, where the ocean still seems to drift into the edges of her stories. Readers usually come for the setting first, whether that means a beach inn, a colorful island town, or a glamorous European backdrop. They stay for the families, the friendships, and the sense that starting over might still lead somewhere good.
