Lady Sophie Lundell looks past the scar and asks for the story behind it, and that is really what the whole series keeps asking. Who is this man when people stop mistaking his damage for his identity?

The setting does a lot of heavy lifting. London drawing rooms, country estates, servants' passages, churchyards, and snowbound parlors are not just pretty scenery. Ashworth uses rank, inheritance, gossip, and the rules of appearance to make every secret feel costly. If you want a Regency mystery series with romance at the edges, a hero who has to earn his peace, and a strong sense of place, Lord Trevelin is a good bet.
