Author bio

Cynthia Lord grew up in rural New Hampshire beside a lake, the kind of place that shows up later in the woods, water, weather, and close-knit communities of her books. She was a shy, daydreaming kid who loved the library, loved animals, and spent plenty of time making up stories. Her sister was her first friend, and the natural world around her gave her a lot to notice, and later, a lot to write about.

Stories came early.

As a student, she wrote plays for church groups, poems, family newspapers, and serialized stories to pass around to friends. In college, some of her short fiction was published, and one story even won a small contest. After college she married, taught first grade and sixth grade, and spent time teaching in a one-room schoolhouse. She also wrote curriculum materials for educational publishers, which gave her a practical feel for how children read, listen, and learn.

Teaching stayed with her.

When her own children were young, Lord found herself back in the world of children's books, first as a parent reading aloud, then again as a writer. She has said that she often writes very early in the morning, before the rest of the house is awake. That quiet routine seems to fit her work. Her stories are calm on the surface, but full of feeling underneath, and they pay close attention to the way children notice unfairness, awkwardness, kindness, and change.

Her first novel, Rules, was published in 2006. The book follows Catherine, a girl trying to manage life with her younger brother David, who is autistic, while also figuring out friendship and what normal even means. Lord, who is the mother of two children, one of whom has autism, brought lived experience to the story without turning it into a lesson book. Rules received a Newbery Honor and the Schneider Family Book Award, and it quickly became the book many readers still start with.

She has kept building from there, often returning to Maine and New England settings. In Touch Blue, an island girl tries to save her community's school. In Half a Chance, photography becomes a way of seeing friendship, memory, and loss more clearly. A Handful of Stars brings together a local girl and the daughter of migrant workers in the blueberry barrens of eastern Maine. Because of the Rabbit and Home Away From Home both look at kids standing on the edge of change, wanting things to stay familiar but learning how to move forward anyway. Readers who love her middle-grade novels usually come back for the same reasons: strong kid voices, real family tension, empathy, and a sense that small choices matter.

She also writes for younger readers. The Hot Rod Hamster books are playful, fast, and full of participation, while the Shelter Pet Squad and Book Buddies series turn animal shelters and library toys into warm, inviting places for early chapter book readers. Her nonfiction picture book Borrowing Bunnies grows out of her family's experience fostering rescue rabbits, which tells you something important about her work in general. She writes with tenderness, but she likes action too.

Lord lives in Brunswick, Maine, with her husband and family, not far from the ocean. She is still the kind of writer who notices the small human detail, the nervous pause before a first sleepover, the dog on the blueberry barrens, the child who wants badly to belong. That steady attention is a big part of why her books connect with both kids and the adults who hand those books to them.
